Netflix is coming to the PS3 [update]



by Andrew Yoon { Oct 26th 2009 at 12:19AM } So this is why Netflix's stock went soaring. After countless rumors, Netflix's streaming service is finally coming to the PlayStation 3. Even better: it'll be free for PlayStation Network members that have a Netflix account. According to the press release, "Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system."

It looks like you'll also be able to manage your Netflix streaming queue directly from your PS3; no need to have accessed the site via computer first. It'll be interesting to see how Microsoft responds to the loss of Netflix exclusivity -- perhaps it will open up the service to free Xbox Live Silver accounts? And will Nintendo ever join the fray?

Update: Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii." Additionally, Pachter believes Netflix streaming will expand to Nintendo's console next year. "We anticipate that a similar arrangement will be announced for the Wii in the next 12 months

Why do I need a home computer again? The PS3 has the capabilities of about everything & anything electronic!

Yep. PS3 is replacing a need for alot of stuff that is bought individually. Think about it, all movies are Blue Ray, no need to buy that at $250.00.. Spend the extra 50 bucks and get a a PS3 with it built in. Now you can download Netfilx and get Blue Ray quality rentals. I am sold, my wife and I talked about NET FLIX a couple of days ago, tired of Blockbuster ripping me off.

I've never used netflix, how is the quality?

netflix is the sh1t. i pay $14 a month and watch about 13-14 movies for that price and don't have to go to the store. most of them come on blu-ray. they have a great selection of tv shows also. been watching stargate sg1. i've been watching netflix,hulu,cbs.com and a whole shitload of other networks on my ps3 for a while now with a program called playon media manager. it also works on 360 and wii. http://www.themediamall.com/playon

I got my streaming disc from netflix but unitll we get the software update from sony it's not working yet but I can wait !!!

try the playon program. it is free for 15 days and you get netflix,hulu,cbs.com and a ton of other websites (just add plugins for sites you like). they also stream sports and adult sites.

Well if have netflix get the streaming disc its free . and so far works great !!!!

I GOT THIS! Its awsome! The disc is free but not the monthly of course. but the send you a disc to steam the videos from your ps3, you also can use you computer. i suggest it!
